In Australia enterprises come in many different variations. There are SMEs, SOHOs, micro businesses, sole traders, small businesses and many other names you may encounter when you look at Australian business statistics. In this category of our web site we will try to help corporations, businesses and other enterprises by talking about statistics, tips and other hot business topics.

But first let's define what all those different businesses are!

• SMEs (small and medium enterprises) have less than 200 employees.
• A small business is defined as a business that employs less than 20 people.
• Medium businesses employ between 20 and 200 people.
• Micro businesses employ less than five people.
• Non-employing businesses such as sole traders and many partnerships do not employ people.
• SOHO (small office home office) are small businesses operating mainly from home.

As you can see from the first three definitions SME is the term describing all small and medium sized businesses or enterprises and encompasses all other terms. So we will use this term most of the time.
